Training We Offer

You do NOT need to be a member of the PMA to take part in this training.

We normally provide a variety of workshops and training sessions countrywide. Currently all training is taking place via Zoom.

At Production Manager level we offer topics ranging from legal issues such as compliance and music licensing, to Health & Safety and tax issues. We also cover technical topics relating to production and the current pandemic situation.

For more junior people, we offer a variety of entry level and limited experience sessions, which are open to all - bursaries are sometimes available via Screenskills.

Training events are FREE to members with fees charged for non-members. Prices vary from session to session. Places are limited according to each type of event.

Access-Based Factual Doc: Legal and Compliance Masterclass
with Nigel Abbas

Venue:               01 Zero-one, Hopkins Street, London W1F 0HS

Access-based single docs and series are a staple of UK television schedules.  Filming with the police, ambulance and other emergency services; following debt collectors; filming in hospitals, prisons, schools, airports … and all sorts of commercial organisations provide some of the most compelling must-see television.

But making and broadcasting such programmes can be fraught with risks: what if the organisation you’ve negotiated access with wants to ‘pull the plug’; what if someone whose been filmed complains their privacy rights have been infringed.  As the recent £120,000 fine, imposed on a UK indie by the data protection regulator the ICO shows, the stakes can be very high indeed for programme-makers.

This 90 minute seminar by specialist television law firm Abbas Media Law looks at the wide range of legal and regulatory issues that crop up when making access-based docs and documentary series.  The session will cover:

  • best practice on securing access;
  • how to persuade organisations who are nervous about granting access that they can do so with minimal legal risk; and
  • how to navigate successfully the myriad of laws and regulations that apply: privacy and defamation laws; data protections laws, as well as all relevant Ofcom rules.
  • changes to data protection law following the implementation of the GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018 which incorporates The Law Enforcement Directive, as well as the position following important regulatory decisions such as Ofcom’s “Miss F” judgment which clarified Ofcom’s position regarding the use of Go-Pro camera filming and when it amounts to secret filming.

The session will be invaluable for anyone involved in making access-based programmes.  Issues will be brought to life through the use of clips, hypotheticals and thorny questions which often arise.  In addition if you have any burning questions on this subject, this is also your chance to grill the Abbas Media Law legal team, who regularly advise on access docs and are some of the most experienced television content lawyers in the country.

Our Sponsors

The PMA is sponsored by a variety of companies in the film and television industry. We have a long-standing relationship with many of them dating back to the PMA’s inception in 1991.

PMA members benefit from the information and services that our sponsors can provide, while sponsors gain access to the upper echelon of Production Managers in the UK who are major purchasers for the industry.

Become a sponsor

We only have one sponsor per area of business but occasionally opportunities to become a sponsor of the PMA do arise.

Sponsors get the chance to meet our members several times a year, host parties, explain their services and write for our magazine The Bottom Line.
